The Program Director is a promotion-track (associate or full) faculty member selected on the basis of outstanding leadership, professional accomplishments and professional recognition who serves as the leader of the Doctorate of Education (EdD) program and a faculty member within the Department of Advanced Studies in Education (ASE), within the Johns Hopkins School of Education (SOE). The role of the program director of the EdD program is (a) to lead and coordinate the academic administration of the EdD program in conjunction with the Senior Academic Program Administrator; (b) supervise, in consultation with the department chair, EdD faculty; (c) work with faculty from other departments and divisions within the university to develop and deliver a multi-disciplinary approach to applied research in educational settings; and (d) to fulfill expected faculty duties in the areas of scholarship, teaching, and service.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties and responsibilities of the EdD Program Director are assigned by the ASE department chair, and include but are not limited to:
- Continued development, implementation, and daily operations of the EdD Program
- Organization, development, and oversight of EdD core curriculum
- Leadership of EdD oversight committee, including student petitions and policy changes/implementation, in collaboration with the Sr. Academic Program Administrator and the department chair
- Oversight of the doctoral program benchmarks in consultation with the programs' support staff and/or the Sr. Academic Program Administrator
- Oversight of program communications to students (i.e., responding to student inquiries and needs in accordance with protocols, which might have the support staff fielding inquiries and passing them to the EdD Program Director as applicable)
- Planning of course offering matrix and semester schedules, including assessing enrollment capacities, faculty assignments, and strategic enrollment management
- Recognizes and applies the program's most recent policies and ensures that program documentation is up to date and consistent with approved SOE policy
- Budget planning, review and approval in consultation with the finance department, Sr. Academic Program Administrator, and the department chair
- Oversight of recruitment and admission of doctoral students in consultation with the School of Education admissions staff Sr. Academic program Administrator
- Building and maintaining relationships with interdisciplinary faculty and staff across the School and the University, as appropriate
- Representation of the EdD Program within and outside the SOE and JHU
- Collaboration with other departments and programs as needed
The EdD Program Director reports to the ASE department chair and/or Vice Dean of Academic Affairs. The Program Director is responsible for the supervision of the adjunct faculty, limited time advisors and adjunct advisors as applicable. Support staff are supervised by the Sr. Academic Program Administrator.
- A doctorate from an accredited university related to education that meets the requirements for appointment as associate or full professor in one of the academic programs housed in the ASE department and builds faculty depth and expertise within the EdD program.
- Significant leadership and administrative experience in a research university.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, build relationships with a wide variety of partners and constituents, and recruit potential students.
- Experience with best practices in residential, hybrid, and online teaching.
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence through teaching, scholarship and service.
- Experience or the potential to be effective advising and mentoring doctoral students.
- A curriculum vita that includes thorough information on prior employment related to education (especially any prior experience doing professional development, working with prospective teachers, or other work related to education in urban settings) educational background (i.e., degrees), research publications and presentations, service, and awards.
