The Seidel School of Education at Salisbury University welcomes applications for the position of Associate or Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Literacy Studies. This is a 12-month, tenure track position. Summer teaching is required.
The successful applicant will join a highly collaborative department that offers a master’s program for reading specialists and an education doctorate in literacy. Department faculty demonstrate a strong commitment to graduate education, share a sociocultural perspective about literacy, and value equity, social justice, diversity, and inclusion.
Primary Job Duties: We seek a candidate who will advance our mission by supporting faculty scholarship, teaching, and service; providing strategic leadership at all levels of the academic community; managing recruitment and program growth; attracting and mentoring a diverse faculty. Administrative expectations include leadership of the departmental faculty, staff, and students; coordination of the department’s academic programs in alignment with the 5-year strategic plan; departmental representation and advocacy; and management of the departmental budget. Other responsibilities include teaching graduate level courses, mentoring doctoral students, serving on dissertation committees, conducting and disseminating research, and university, professional and/or community service. Strong interpersonal skills necessary for working collaboratively with students, faculty, staff and external constituents.
Minimum Qualifications: Earned doctoral degree in literacy or related field and a scholarly record appropriate for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure; demonstrated success in strategic academic leadership; excellence in teaching at the graduate level; successful mentoring of doctoral students to degree completion; experience teaching in F2F, hybrid, and online contexts; three years of literacy teaching experience in prek-12 or adult education programs; a track record of external funding for research and/or teacher professional development; experience with program assessment and/or accreditation; demonstrated record of continued and productive engagement with the professional literacy community; and a commitment to implementing and advancing the values of inclusion and diversity at the classroom, department, school, university, and community levels. The successful candidate will also have effective team and consensus building experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Reading specialist or literacy coach professional experience. Demonstrated success recruiting and retaining students from underrepresented backgrounds. Experience with mixed methods, quantitative research, or practitioner research. Literacy clinical supervision experience.
